Plans for Sevastopol's First Mosque Approved

Plans to build a mosque in central Sevastopol', Ukraine, have been approved by the city's government. Although in an area formerly part of the Crimean Khanate and the Ottoman Empire, Sevastopol' was founded following the Russian Empire's conquest of the Khanate and the mosque will thus be the city's first. Most Muslims in the Crimea are Tatars expelled from the territory during World War II and mosque construction is therefore a contentious issues for the area's Slav majority, which generally opposes the return of the Crimean Tatars to their homeland.
