South Sudan Refuses War Over Abyei

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has said that his country will not go to war with North Sudan over the latter's ongoing effort to ethnically cleanse a disputed district straddling the North-South Sudan border. More here.

North and South Sudan Begin Talks in Ethiopia

North and South Sudan have begun talks in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, to negotiate the peaceful separation of the two states this coming July and determine the status of South Sudanese working in North Sudan, many of whom were born and raised in North Sudan. More here.

As independence approaches for South Sudan its problems seem to be mounting with an internal rebellion, plans underway for an expensive new capital, North Sudanese military operations in neighboring Abyei district, and the assassination of one of its ministers being at the forefront. More here.

Increase in North Sudanese Armed Forces in Abyei

Satellite images are tracking a build-up of forces in the North Sudanese district of Abyei, where a referendum on joining an independent South Sudan was blocked by violence. Although the referendum in the district was agreed to by both North and South Sudan, Abyei has significant oil reserves and North Sudan is reluctant to lose it in addition to the substantial South Sudanese reserves. Ugandan Orthodox Priest Appointed to Lead Alexandrian Orthodox Church in South Sudan

My parish priest during my high school days, Archimandrite Innocentios (Byakatonda), was blessed this past Sunday to establish our Alexandrian Orthodox Church in South Sudan. Axios! South Sudan was previously under the rather distant care of the Metropolis of Khartoum and the appointment will, God willing, finally enable Orthodoxy to be planted in a region that has suffered for quite some time. South Sudan Set for Independence in July 2011

President Omar al-Bashir of Sudan has said that he will accept the results of a recent referendum in South Sudan, which put 98.83% of voters in favor of independence for the region. Provided all goes well South Sudan will become an independent state under President Salva Kiir (currently Vice-President of Sudan) on 9 July 2011. More here.

South Sudan Votes for Independence

In the recent referendum in South Sudan nearly 99% of voters chose independence for the region over maintaining its loose confederation with North Sudan. The new country born out of Africa's largest state will be roughly the size of Texas and home to roughly 9 million people.
