New Coptic Orthodox Pope Enthroned

Pope Theodore II (al-Anba Bishoy) has been enthroned at St. Mark's Cathedral in the Cairene district of Abbasiya as patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria and 118th successor to St. Mark. The enthronement prayer was read by Patriarch Moran Mor Ignatius Zacchaeus (Iwas) of the Syriac Orthodox Church. Axios!

Pope Shenouda Meets with Former Arab League Leader in Cairo

Former head of the Arab League and Egyptian presidential candidate Amr Moussa has visited Pope Shenouda III (al-Suriani) of the Coptic Orthodox Church at the Cathedral of St. Mark in Abbasiya, Cairo. During their meeting the two discussed ongoing political developments in Egypt and the need for a new constitution that would protect the rights of all of Egypt's citizens. More here.

Copts Rally at Abbasiya Cathedral

Thousands of Copts surrounded St. Mark's Cathedral in Abbasiya, Cairo, today in response to last Friday's demonstrations outside the cathedral by Muslim fundamentalists demanding the release of Coptic Orthodox priest's wife Camelia Shehata. More here.

In the meantime, Camelia Shehata has appeared today in a publicly released picture with her husband and son, once again refuting Islamist claims that she is being held against her will in a monastery by the Coptic Orthodox Church. More here.

Copts Announce March to Protect Abbasiya Cathedral

Several Coptic Orthodox movements announced earlier today that they will be organizing a million-man march at Cairo's Cathedral of St. Mark in Abbasiya this coming Friday in response to this past Friday's sit-in at the papal cathedral by Muslim fundamentalists. The march is intended to protect the cathedral from possible attack by Muslim fundamentalists leaving Friday prayers. More here.
