New Archbishop of Alba Iulia Elected
The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church has, in consultation with the Archdiocesan Assembly of Alba Iulia, elected auxiliary Bishop Irineu (Pop) of Bistrita as Archbishop of Alba Iulia. His enthronement is scheduled to take place on the Sunday of the Fathers of the First Council of Nicaea. The new Archbishop of Alba Iulia was born in Romania, but prior to his consecration to the episcopacy served as a priest in the patriarchal Romanian Orthodox Church in the United States. Candidates for Archbishop of Alba Iulia Announced
The Local Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Metropolitanate of Cluj has designated two candidates for consideration for election to the vacant cathedra of the Archdiocese of Alba Iulia, which became vacant when its archbishop was elected Metropolitan of Cluj. The candidates are Bishop Andrei of Fagaras, auxiliary of the Archdiocese of Sibiu, and Bishop Irineu of Bistrita, auxiliary of the Metropolitanate of Cluj. More (in Romanian) here.

Cluj Metropolitan Council Meets, Nominates Candidates for Metropolitanate
At today's meeting of the Metropolitan Council of Metropolitanate of Cluj under Patriarch Daniel (Ciobotea) of Bucharest the candidacy of Archbishop Andrei of Alba Iulia and auxiliary Bishop Irineu of Bistrita for the vacant cathedra of the metropolitanate was approved. Tomorrow's joint meeting of the Metropolitan Council and the Cluj diocesan assembly can either nominate one of the hierarchs for the Cluj cathedra or nominate someone else from the list of candidates approved by the Bucharest Patriarchate.
